Days Out   /   guide

Choose a rainy-day alternative nearby

A rainy-day alternative works best when it is nearby and easy to enter.

A rainy-day alternative works best when it is nearby and easy to enter. Replacing an outdoor walk with a distant attraction can consume the day in wet transfers.

Choose an option close to your base or planned route, then check opening hours, booking requirements and access. A covered market, small museum or quiet meal might fit, but none should be assumed available from an old map listing. Keep the alternative appropriate to the actual weather; severe conditions may call for following local advice and staying put.

Change the journey as well as the destination

Check how much of the new route is exposed, including the walk from a stop to the entrance. A short distance on a map can include a long wait outside. Consider wet bags and clothing, and avoid relying on a business to store them without asking.

Set one simple trigger for changing plans, such as the official forecast or conditions at the time you are due to leave. This prevents repeated debate while the morning disappears. Keep any cancellation terms visible if the original activity was booked.

The alternative need not imitate the original plan. A slower indoor visit may be the better use of the day. Save the outdoor route for another suitable time instead of trying to force the same list of stops through a different kind of weather.
