Choose the station exit before the walking route

The nearest point on a map may sit on the wrong side of a station.

The nearest point on a map may sit on the wrong side of a station. Choose a suitable exit before calculating the walk to your destination.

Check the station operator's map for exit names, opening arrangements and accessible routes. A street-level map alone may not show stairs, passageways or barriers. Save the exact exit name with the destination address, particularly when a large station spans several blocks.

Follow signs before the blue dot

Inside the building, use official signs and staff information. A phone's location can be imprecise indoors, so a spinning map is not a reason to walk against signs or enter a restricted passage. If a lift is important to your route, check its current status through the appropriate operator before travelling.

After leaving, pause in a suitable place clear of doors and moving crowds. Orient the map to a recognisable street or building, then begin the walk. This is easier than correcting your direction while pulling a suitcase through an entrance.

Keep a second suitable exit in mind if the preferred route is closed. It may change the walk, so allow time to reassess. The useful route begins at the place you can actually reach, not at the geometric centre of a station symbol.
