Pack around the work your bag must do

Choose a travel bag by the jobs it must do between doorways.

Choose a travel bag by the jobs it must do between doorways. Carrying it up steps, lifting it onto a rack and finding a ticket can matter more than the packing photograph.

List the transitions in your actual route. Include station access, accommodation stairs and the distance over surfaces that may not suit small wheels. Check the current baggage rules of each operator; allowances can differ across one trip. Do not assume that a bag sold as cabin luggage qualifies everywhere.

Pack for access

Put items needed during the journey where you can reach them without unpacking everything in a public place. Keep required documents secure and follow transport rules for restricted items. A loose collection of pouches is less helpful if the one holding your ticket sits below all your clothes.

Do a short rehearsal at home with the bag loaded. Lift it safely, move through a doorway and see whether you can set it down without blocking a passage. If it is difficult now, remove items or choose a different arrangement rather than expecting travel to make it easier.

Leave a little space for the return journey. The useful bag is not necessarily the smallest one. It is the one you can handle reliably, within the rules, while keeping the essential parts of the journey accessible.
